Alex Wang
Singer, songwriter, director, teacher… these are just some of the things that Alex has done to date.

Writing his first song at the age of 15, “with 3 chords on a guitar”, Alex began his colourful journey of music. Without a formal music education, Alex developed a unique style of songwriting that is simple and evocative.

Releasing his debut English album “Someday” in 2003, Alex brought his brand of music to the public through his launch concert at the Substation. One of his most enduring songs “Change the World” is featured in that album.

Bolstered by the positive response to “Someday”, his second studio release “Veritas” followed a year and a half later. Showing an impressive range of genres (techno-dance “Absolutely” to pop ballad “Surrender”), Alex pushed the limits of his musical creativity to produce a truly eclectic album that is sincere and honest.

His musical journey took a detour in 2006 when he wrote “Believe - The Musical” while teaching at a local secondary school.

“I wrote Believe as a teacher, not as a musician or a composer. I wrote it for my students to act and perform in, with the hope that the experience of performing on a world-class stage would give them the inspiration and confidence to take their lives to the next level.”

“Believe - The Musical” is a coming-of-age story that featured the lives of the heartland teenagers. In 2007, “Believe - The Musical” was staged twice: once in April and again in September to sold-out crowds at the Esplanade Recital Studio. In addition to writing the story, Alex also composed and wrote all the songs in the musical. In the September production, he played the role of the title character “Teck An”.

Fresh out from “Believe - The Musical”, Alex went on to direct the abridged version of Stella Kon’s “Blue Willow House” at Temasek Polytechnic, which featured the use of 3D backgrounds as part of the set. This was quickly followed by the production of “I Want To Be A Star”, an adaptation of “Believe - The Musical”, in which Alex was the Artistic Director.

Always hungry for new experiences, Alex took a minor role in Dance Ensemble Singapore’s “Butterfly Dreams”, a dance musical, appearing next to Xinyao legend Jiu Jian and Mediacorp artiste, Nick Shen.

Alex returned to his music roots after a hiatus of 4 years with the release of his 3rd studio album “No Explanation” in late 2009. Sleek arrangements with memorable melodies, “No Explanation” saw a maturity in his songwriting, testament of his varied experience in the previous years. Musical theatre styling is also evident in the songs “Waiting For You” and “Always There”.

2010 proved to be a huge year for Alex. Kicking off the year with his solo concert “Alex Wang - No Explanation Live 2010” at the Esplanade Recital Studio, Alex went on to direct and produce “Believe - The Musical” for the 3rd time, staging it at The Republic Cultural Centre Theatre.

“I wanted more students to experience the musical, and also wanted to make it as educational an experience for them as possible. I didn’t want it to be passive activity; the students should be able to understand the underlying messages in Believe.” Alex intimated.

To that end, Alex wrote “Believe - The Novel”, which depicted the story in the musical in greater depth and detail. He also produced a special student pack (a folder with additional material on the characters and story) that was given to each student who came to the show.

“Believe - The Musical” was staged on 10th July 2010 and was graced by Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Mr. Baey Yam Keng.

With the experience gleaned from the musical, Alex teamed up again with Jiu Jian for his children's Chinese musical, "The Adventures of Wei Wei and Kang Kang", serving as Artistic Director and Vocal Coach. The musical was staged at the Chamber, The Arts House in March 2011, and featured Mediacorp artisite Henry Heng and twins Roseann and Raeann Heng.

Never one to be complacent, Alex has teamed up with prolific theatre musician, performer and arranger , Julian Wong, to produce his 4th independent album offering, “Walk Away”.

Collaborating for the first time with an arranger, Alex expresses “It’s been just incredible… Julian has such a wonderful sense of music, and he treats my music with such sensitivity and respect… it really touches my heart.”

Alex currently resides in Singapore, and continues to use his music and writing to express, educate and inspire.
